Does Underwire Cause Breast Cancer?
Google “Does Underwire Cause Cancer” and right away, you can tell its a mixed bag. Result #1 says “No”, Result #2, “Maybe”, and it just keeps alternating. There’s a good reason nobody outright says that bras are linked to breast cancer — there are no definitive studies.
As we continue to talk about bras (specifically our Vibrant Bra) we get asked about underwire and health claims. Many have asked us to put our stake in the ground, so here it is. Underwire causing cancer is a moot point.
Nobody can claim a direct link to cancer. But what we do know is that a wired bra is often restrictive. It restricts breast tissue as well as lymph nodes. We believe that restricting your body, any part of your body, for a prolonged or consistent period, is not healthy. We believe that freedom of movement and the flow of internal systems is important and the healthier, more comfortable option.
Underwire was invented in the 1930's, and has never been redesigned. It’s a ten cent, flattened piece of nickel. It pokes, it presses, it digs and it restricts. A medical study is unnecessary in showing that this is undesirable.
We’re not into snake oil, false claims or fear tactics. Our goal, quite simply, is to live an informed and healthy life, and to share what we learn and love along the way. We believe that it’s better to be unrestricted — and having an understanding around the options and choices that are alternatives to underwire, is empowering.
A wire-free bra that is flattering, non-toxic and sexy is the best option of all. So of course, check out the Vibrant Bra. Wireless, but sexy. Non-toxic, comfortable and supportive.
